Artful Paper Dolls by Terry TaylorDolly Dingle Visits Scott And Martin by Darlene Ostrem really brought the paper doll theme home for us! This dressed-up diorama takes Dolly Dingle on a trip with a clothes line full of clip-on togs! We particularly liked the multi-media assemblage of photos, purchased embellishments, rocks, and natural findings. It is all held together with glue and a sense of humor! We’ll admit to a touch of bias – we liked being included in her story. Darlene will receive a copy of Terry Taylor's wonderful book,Artful Paper Dolls generously provided by Sterling Publishing. Darlene's artwork will also be displayed on the Vintage Image Craft Home Page for one month!

Ten Vintage Christmas Greetings to Make by Vintage Image CraftDolly Dingle Dressed-Up in Three-D by Sally Swift leaps of the background! She embraced the paper doll spirit by dressing Dolly Dingle in satin, velvet and lace. Victorian fashion details include layers of pink ruffles, gathered bodice and ribbon flower festoons. Most impressive was the layered paper tole technique which compliments the dimensional costume. The finished background and frame make this a beautiful keepsake! Sally will receive a VIC e-book from our Cards With a Past series.

Christmas Children collage sheetBathing Beauties Banner by Nancy Yankowski is like a sunny day at a Victorian seaside resort. We loved the alternating flags and cavorting bathers, nicely proportioned for the length of the banner. The nautical blue ribbons and embellishments played up the waterfront theme beautifully. This is a wet and witty take on paper dolls at Beach Blanket Bingo! Nancy (a return champion from last year's Challenge) will receive a Vintage Image Craft Image Book download.

Congratulations to our WINNERS, and thank you for your participation, too! The judging decisions were difficult, but each entry gave us reason to revel in the creative mind! Every artist embraced the paper doll theme, and found new ways to dress up this beloved toy. Fabulous work by everyone!

We want to acknloweldge Sterling Publishing and Lark Crafts, for generously donating the grand prize, Terry Taylor's remarkable book, artful paper dolls. Terry takes paper dolls in a dozen new directions. Here are paper dolls re-interpreted through imaginative materials, craft technologies, and mixed-media. They include paper dolls as symbols, social commentary, fashion decoration, and yes, even toys. But as the book cover states, "These are not the paper dolls of your childhood!"

The FIRST and SECOND prize winners of the VIC Creative Challenge both chose Dolly Dingle as their superstar. And why not? She was the paper doll sweetheart of Jazz-age America, first appearing in Pictorial Review magazine in 1913. Over the next 20 years, artist Grace Drayton dressed her and her cast of fun little friends for every adventure, taking her around the world and back again.

Next Issue

We've received several impassioned suggestions for our next VIC Creative Challenge for September. At the top of the list so far is Christmas, followed closely by Cats. The suggestions were clear: create something using Vintage cat images, not something made out of actual cat.

Write to us with your suggestions and ideas for a rollicking VIC Creative Challenge. We plan to announce the next Challenge in August. Again, Sterling Publications has donated some terrific prizes from their vast catalog of best-selling craftbooks.

Enjoy the heart of summer, and keep creating.
